Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using these treatments should be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
