Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
